Fish guide app based on Ionic and Laravel

As part of the Fischführer ("fish guide") project we developed an iOS and Android app for each of several German states. The app lets anglers identify the fish of their state via a directory, view detailed information on every species and look up closed-season information. Anglers and fishery managers can also enter and compile individually differing closed seasons, minimum sizes and catch limits for target fish in their app. There is currently a fish guide for Hesse, Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Brandenburg and Baden-Württemberg.

Fokus

Because anglers often use these apps in places where mobile coverage or Wi-Fi may be poor, we paid special attention to solid offline functionality. Content fetched from the backend server is downloaded and cached on the device. This greatly improves performance, since communication with the server is reduced to a minimum, and it makes users more independent, as most functions also work offline. Files newly stored on the backend server are queried automatically by the app, downloaded in online mode and then cached again.

Scaling and delivering images in the app

The app can request images from the server application in specific sizes depending on screen size and device. The server scales all images down to different sizes and packs them into an archive, which is then made available to the apps for download. Depending on the device's screen size, the appropriate images are downloaded. The apps unzip the downloaded archives. This is realised with the technologies rxjs, pngquant, zanysoft and laravel-zip.
