PageSpeed Optimisation

A slow website costs twice. Visitors who bounce, and rankings Google hands to faster competitors. We make your website measurably faster and, with continuous monitoring, make sure it stays that way.

Why your website's load time decides success

Since Google established the Core Web Vitals as a ranking factor, load time is no longer a pure comfort question: it directly influences how visible your website is in the search results, particularly on mobile devices. And regardless of ranking: the longer a page loads, the more visitors bounce before seeing any content at all.

If you want to make your website faster, you have to find the actual brakes: in the code, in the hosting, in the content. That's exactly where we start. Yet another performance plugin on top is rarely the solution, usually it's even part of the problem.

Core Web Vitals: understanding LCP, INP and CLS

The Core Web Vitals are Google's metrics for a page's user experience. Three figures count:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how quickly the largest visible content loads, usually a hero image or a large heading. Target: under 2.5 seconds
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how quickly the page reacts to clicks and input. Sluggish JavaScript is the most common brake here
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how stable the layout stays while loading, instead of shifting content while you're already reading or about to click

You'll find the detailed definitions in our glossary on LCP, INP and CLS. This page is about how we concretely improve the values.

What makes websites slow in practice

In our PageSpeed audits, a few brakes come up again and again, regardless of whether the site runs on WordPress, TYPO3 or a custom stack:

  • Unoptimised images: files too large, outdated formats instead of WebP/AVIF, missing size attributes that additionally cause layout shifts
  • Render-blocking CSS and JavaScript: scripts and styles that hold up displaying the page even though they're only needed later
  • Plugin and tag sprawl: every tracking script, every feature plugin loads its own resources, often on every single page
  • Missing or misconfigured caching: pages get recomputed on every request instead of being delivered ready-made
  • Slow hosting: sluggish server response times that no frontend optimisation in the world can compensate
  • Web fonts that block text display or make the layout jump as they load in

Which of these brakes act on your site, the measurement shows. With Lighthouse, PageSpeed Insights and WebPageTest we determine the current state and prioritise the measures by impact: what delivers the biggest improvement per hour invested?

Optimising once isn't enough: PageSpeed needs monitoring

The underestimated part of every PageSpeed optimisation: the time afterwards. A plugin update, a new tracking script, an uncompressed image in the next blog post, and the laboriously optimised values degrade gradually without anyone noticing. Often it's only spotted once the rankings are already slipping.

SiteSentry — PageSpeed monitoring that doesn't look away

Because we found no tool on the market monitoring PageSpeed continuously and simply, we built it ourselves: SiteSentry measures your pages regularly, proactively detects regressions in the Core Web Vitals and makes visible when and through what your website got slower. Free to use, even without commissioning us.

For our maintenance clients, the monitoring is a fixed part of the care: if a value degrades, we look into it before you notice it in the visitor numbers. Why manual re-checking doesn't suffice for that, we've written up on the PageSpeed monitoring page.

How we concretely implement PageSpeed optimisation

After the measurement comes the implementation, and with us that happens in the code, not in a recommendation list:

  • Image optimisation: modern formats, correct sizes, lazy loading for content below the fold
  • A CSS and JavaScript diet: remove the unnecessary, inline the critical, defer the rest, so nothing blocks rendering any more
  • A caching strategy: browser caching, server-side caching and, where sensible, a CDN, matched to your hosting
  • Optimised font loading: system fonts where possible, web fonts with font-display and preloading without layout jumps
  • A hosting check: if the server is the brake, we say so honestly, including concrete alternatives
  • Re-measuring instead of assuming: every measure is measured before/after, so you see what it actually delivered

PageSpeed is no isolated topic here: fast pages are the technical foundation of good on-page SEO and are also preferentially crawled by AI search systems. How the two connect, we're happy to show you in conversation.

What we let ourselves be measured by: our own homepage

Any agency can promise a lot. So we invite you to check us ourselves: our homepage reaches top Google PageSpeed values in the green zone, on mobile as on desktop and across all four categories.
