Ulm is a city of science, and that shapes the websites built here. The university, the wider research presence, medical technology and commercial vehicle engineering have one thing in common: their content comes from specialists, not from a central editorial desk. Twenty departments write, each about its own subject, and none of them has time to attend a backend training session twice. So the structure has to be simple enough to explain itself and strict enough that the site still holds together.

Bilingualism comes on top of that. In research and medical technology, English is not a secondary version added at some point but an equal language with its own audience. Do you have an office in Ulm?
No, our only location is Stuttgart-Feuerbach. We keep no address in Ulm. We take the hour on the road when a meeting in one room genuinely gets to an answer faster, and keep the rest deliberately lean.
How do we maintain German and English side by side?
Every page has a source language and any number of translations. In the backend you see next to each other what is translated and what is not. Whether a missing version falls back to the German text or does not appear at all is decided per area, because the sensible answer differs with the audience.
How do you train people who touch the backend only rarely?
With short sessions on whatever is coming up, rather than an all-round course of which nothing is left three weeks later. You also get a brief guide built around your own examples. Somebody who only writes news items never has to see the rest.
Do you meet digital accessibility requirements?
Yes, and it goes into the sitepackage rather than into a later addition. For publicly funded institutions we settle at the start which requirements apply in the specific case, because that depends on the responsible body. What we implemented is written down in a form that holds up when someone checks.
