TYPO3 Updates & LTS Migration

TYPO3 lives off a clear LTS rhythm — follow it and you stay secure and maintainable. We take on version updates, security patches and, where needed, the migration to a new LTS generation for you.

TYPO3's version history and LTS cycle

TYPO3 has been in use since 1998 and has been continuously developed as an open-source CMS ever since. For several major versions the project has followed a fixed LTS rhythm (long term support): every LTS version receives security updates over a longer period before a new LTS generation takes over the support.

The current LTS state

  • TYPO3 v13 LTS is the current generation and, per the official roadmap, receives security updates until October 2027
  • TYPO3 v12 loses free community support in April 2026 — instances on v12 should be migrated to v13 by then
  • For versions beyond their regular LTS window, TYPO3 offers ELTS (extended long term support), a paid extension of the security updates — sensible as a bridge, not as a permanent solution
  • TYPO3 runs its own security team with publicly documented security advisories and a binding response time for reported vulnerabilities

If your installation runs on an older, no-longer-supported version, security-relevant gaps stay open, regardless of how well maintained the rest of the content is. We're happy to look at your current version state without obligation.

Update or relaunch — which makes more sense?

The question comes up with almost every existing project: does a regular update suffice, or is a relaunch worthwhile right away? There's no blanket answer. It depends on the technical state of your current installation.

What we base the decision on

  • The current version state: if your setup is based on a comparatively current version (v10 upwards) and a clean sitepackage, a regular LTS update usually suffices
  • The age and state of the codebase: heavily grown legacy instances with a thick plugin layer or outdated TYPO3 versions can often be rebuilt faster and more safely than migrated step by step
  • Extension compatibility: custom-developed Extbase extensions must be checked for compatibility with every larger version jump — the more custom code, the more thorough the check
  • Strategic goals: if a new design, a multi-site expansion or a change of information architecture is due anyway, that speaks for a relaunch rather than an isolated update

Before every onboarding we run a technical status check of your installation — code base, sitepackage, extension state, vulnerabilities, hosting, and afterwards tell you honestly which route is the right one for your project.

When which update is due

Not every TYPO3 update takes the same effort. Roughly, three update types can be distinguished:

  • Security-relevant fixes: small, targeted patches that should be applied promptly as soon as they're published in a security advisory
  • Minor version updates: new functions and bug fixes within the same major version, plannable as part of the ongoing maintenance
  • Version updates between LTS generations: the most laborious case, since extensions, sitepackage and TypoScript configuration must be checked for compatibility and partly adapted

The effort differs accordingly — small security updates can usually be covered within a maintenance retainer, while a version update between LTS generations is estimated individually.

TYPO3 update installation

We take on the ongoing maintenance of your TYPO3 instance and proactively look after necessary and sensible updates. You determine in which cycles and with which budget we install TYPO3 updates.

Tested on staging before it goes live

Larger updates we test first on a staging environment and document the changes before they go live after your approval. If interface elements or functions change in ways your editorial team should be informed about, we produce a fitting short guide for it.

ELTS as a transitional solution

If you can't implement a version update immediately, we bridge the time until the migration with TYPO3 ELTS where needed, so your installation keeps receiving security-relevant updates beyond the regular LTS window.
