WordPress Website Development
Building a website is easy these days. Building one that fits your company, that your own people can maintain and that still holds up in three years is work. We have been doing that with WordPress since 2013, for companies in Stuttgart and across the rest of the country.
When WordPress is the right choice
We give product-neutral advice. For a plain digital business card a site builder is often enough, and we will say so. WordPress pays off as soon as content is added regularly, several people in-house are meant to maintain it, or features are needed that go beyond the standard. For very large editorial networks with many languages and fine-grained permissions we look at TYPO3 instead. How we approach website projects in general is described on our page about website development.
Typical reasons for WordPress
- Editorial upkeep: text, images and new pages go into the system without an agency.
- Growth: five pages become fifty, without anything having to be rebuilt.
- Extensibility: forms, bookings, interfaces or a shop can be added later.
- No licence costs: the system itself costs nothing, you pay for work and hosting.
- Data sovereignty: code, content and hosting location stay with you.
Structure and content come before design
The most common reason a project drags on is missing content. A draft can be made to look good with dummy text, but the moment you start filling it in you find out whether the structure matches reality. So we clarify early which pages there should be, who writes them and by when. Where texts are missing we say so openly, instead of letting the deadline quietly slip.
What we settle at the start
- Page structure and navigation: what belongs in the menu, what goes deeper, what can go.
- Content types: which recurring formats exist, such as references, job ads or locations.
- Responsibilities: who supplies text, who sources images, who signs off.
- Existing content: what comes along from the old site and what gets replaced.
- Goals: enquiries, applications, appointments, whatever success is measured against.
A custom theme instead of a builder inside the builder
Page builders like Elementor or Divi promise freedom and deliver it too, up to a certain site size. After that the balance tips, because every block brings its own CSS and JavaScript along and load time suffers noticeably. So we build a custom theme that only does what your site actually needs.
For the editorial team that does not mean less freedom, just a clearer kind of it. Instead of an empty canvas with a hundred options there are ready-made blocks that always look right. How we handle the design side is described on our page about WordPress web design. Where the standard is not enough, we build custom plugins for your features.
What runs along from the start
Some things are hard to retrofit later. We take care of those right away, instead of selling them as an extra.
- Technical SEO: clean URL structure, heading hierarchy, meta data, XML sitemap.
- Load time: optimised images in modern formats, lean code, sensible caching.
- Accessibility: contrast, keyboard operation and structure to WCAG 2.1 AA, which the German accessibility act now makes mandatory for many companies.
- Data protection: a consent solution, locally hosted fonts, clean embedding of maps and videos.
- Legal pages: imprint, privacy policy and the rest cleanly integrated, with the wording agreed with your legal advisers.
From briefing to go-live
We work in manageable steps and show the current state continuously on a test environment. That way there is no surprise at the end, just a site you already got to know along the way.
The typical project steps
- Briefing and goals: target audience, competition, existing systems, what the site has to achieve.
- Structure and concept: page tree, content types, features, editorial plan.
- Design: drafts of the central page types, matched to your corporate identity.
- Build: custom theme, features, integrations, content entry.
- QA and training: testing on all devices, briefing your team on the day-to-day upkeep.
- Go-live: switchover including redirects, then monitoring of the first few days.
It does not stop at go-live
A website is not a piece of furniture you put down once and forget. WordPress, the theme and the extensions get updates constantly, security holes turn up, and content ages. Ignore that and after two years you have a site nobody wants to touch. On request we take over the ongoing upkeep completely, see WordPress maintenance & security, and we can look after hosting and search engine optimisation as well.
